Norwich police make arrest in stolen cemetery statue case

Sean P. McNee, 43, of Willimantic, was charged with first-degree larceny, first-degree criminal mischief and desecration of a grave site.

Norwich – City police arrested a Willimantic man this morning and recovered part of the statue he allegedly stole from the Yantic Cemetery last month.

Sean P. McNee, 43, was charged with first-degree larceny, first-degree criminal mischief and desecration of a grave site.

The 450-pound, 120-year-old bronze statue was reported missing from the cemetery on Feb. 19. About five days later police received information on its location. They were able to recover most of the statue, which had been cut in to several pieces, police said. The statue was valued at $35,000.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for McNee and arrested him at his home this morning.

The investigation is ongoing and police anticipate additional arrests.

McNee was ordered held on $150,000 bond and is due in Norwich Superior Court Tuesday.
