    Police Arrest Doctor with Suspended License to Prescribe

    Doctor Scott W. Houghton M.D., 43, of 15 Sheperds Trail, Madison was arrested this morning, April 12, on numerous felony drug charges. Dr. Houghton's license to prescribed controlled substances was suspended on February 3, 2010 and he continued to write prescriptions for controlled substances after this time.

    The arrest follows an investigation that took over two years to complete. On February 2, 2010 a Search and Seizure Warrant was executed at Dr. Houghton's medical practice at 929 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook, by Old Saybrook Department of Police Services, Connecticut Consumer Protection Drug Control Division, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Middletown State's Attorney's Office, and U.S. Office of the Inspector General Special Investigations Unit Computer Forensics. Evidence was seized from the office to aid in the investigation.

    Dr. Houghton was arrested and charged with Illegal Prescribing/Sale of Narcotics (30 Counts), Illegal Prescribing/Sale of Controlled Substance (14 Counts), Failure to Maintain Controlled Substance Records with Intent (2 Counts), and Failure to Maintain Security for Controlled Substance Records with Intent (1 Count).

    Dr. Houghton was released on a court set bond of $250,000.00. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, April 26.
