Scott W. Houghton, M.D., age 43, of 15 Sheperds Trail, Madison, was arrested April 12 on numerous felony drug charges. The arrest follows an investigation that took more than two years to complete.

On Feb. 2, 2010 a search and seizure warrant was executed at Houghton's medical practice at 929 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook, by Old Saybrook Department of Police Services, Connecticut Consumer Protection Drug Control Division, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Middletown State's Attorney's Office, and the U.S. Office of the Inspector General Special Investigations Unit Computer Forensics. Evidence was seized from the office to aid in the investigation. Houghton's license to prescribe controlled substances was suspended on Feb. 3, 2010 and he continued to write prescriptions for controlled substances after that time.

Houghton was arrested and charged with 30 counts of illegal prescribing/sale of narcotics, 14 counts of illegal prescribing/sale of controlled substance, two counts of failure to maintain controlled substance records with intent, and one count of failure to maintain security for controlled substance records with intent.

Houghton was released on a court-set bond of $250,000 and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, April 26. The Connecticut Consumer Protection Drug Control Division was the lead investigating agency and was assisted by the Old Saybrook Department of Police Services, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Middletown State's Attorney's Office, United State's Attorney's Office, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Office of the Inspector General Special Investigations Unit Computer Forensics, Connecticut State Police, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
