Millstone meeting for possible extra oversight June 30

Staff for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting June 30 to discuss possible additional oversight of the Unit 2 reactor at Millstone Power Station following events in February that led to an unexpected power increase.

The meeting will be held at the NRC’s Region I Office, at 475 Allendale Road in King of Prussia, Pa., and the public will have an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the meeting. Remote access will be available for those who cannot be present by calling NRC Spokesman Neil Sheehan at 610-337-5331.

On Feb. 2, operators did not properly handle an unintended power increase from 88 to 96 percent, the NRC has found. The agency is considering issuing a “white” finding which would result in extra oversight if the agency confirms that Unit 2 workers failed to “carry out their assigned roles and responsibilities” and inadequately managed power control during main turbine control valve testing.

The purpose of the conference is to discuss the inspection finding and its safety significance and give Millstone owner Dominion an opportunity to clarify any issues raised in the NRC inspection report. No decision on the apparent violation or any enforcement action will be made at the conference, but will be made at a later date, Sheehan said.
