Water Street is really a water street as Thames overflows

Waves splash up on the sidewalk between Waterfront Park and the parking lot for the Fishers Island Ferry in New London as the wind of Hurricane Irene blows on Sunday, August 28, 2011.

New London – At the height of high tide around 9:45 a.m., the Thames River was churning like the ocean.

A portion of Water Street is closed due to flooding and water is spilling out into the Cross Sound Ferry parking lot. The ramps leading to the Cross Sound Ferry are under water and half of the Block Island Ferry ticket and information booth is underwater.

Two ferries are tied down and debris is washing up into the parking lot.
