CL&P restores power to cooling system at Millstone

Waterford - Connecticut Light & Power restored electricity to a closed reactor's spent fuel pool cooling system at Millstone Power Station around midnight Sunday, owner Dominion said this morning.

Dominion had had a generator available in case the power wasn't restored following the hurricane and tropical storm, Irene.

Dominion spokesman Ken Holt said the public was not in danger because the temperature in the water that keeps the used fuel cool was being constantly monitored while the power was out to make sure it did not increase because the cooling system was off. The spent fuel in the Unit 1 pool is more than a decade old and has lost much of its residual heat.

The site's two operating reactors, Units 2 and 3, remained at about half power this morning, Holt said.
