Avalonia Land Conservancy adds five preserves

The Avalonia Land Conservancy announced Monday that it has recently added five preserves to its holdings in southeastern Connecticut.

The nonprofit land trust credited the generosity of local individuals and businesses with making the acquisitions possible.

    The five are:

    • Erisman Woodlands, a 62-acre preserve in North Stonington named in honor of its donor, Adele Erisman.

    • A 15-acre parcel donated by Stonington Meadows LLC. It is an ecologically valuable riparian buffer to Anguilla Brook Preserve.

    • Burton's Island, 25 wooded acres with marshy inlets and impressive native flora at the south end of Pachaug Pond in Griswold. It was donated by Jill Marquardt-Scola of Westerly and her family and will be named the Scola Preserve in memory of Lee Curtis Marquardt and Grace Scola.

    • Approximately two acres on the southeastern side of Hewitt Road in Stonington, donated by Mystic Seaport. It is comprised of an important coastal shrub habitat and is contiguous with existing open space around the Bishops Cove subdivision.

    • 17 acres of wooded uplands, to be named the Dutka Family Preserve, donated by four members of the Dutka family of Griswold.

"Each of these properties has significant conservation value, and each is a component in our ongoing plan of strategic conservation," Duncan Schweitzer, Avalonia president, said in a news release. "Each represents a valuable step toward our goal of developing forest blocks and wildlife corridors of ecological significance and public benefit."

Avalonia preserves almost 3,000 acres in southeastern Connecticut. A comprehensive listing, as well as maps and trail guides can be found at www.avalonialandconservancy.org. New members and volunteers are welcome.
