H.S. girls' lacrosse: Waterford edges Stonington 9-8
Stonington - Montara Tomasetti's fourth goal of the game Thursday with 1 minute, 6 seconds remaining, gave the No. 13 Waterford High School girls' lacrosse team a 9-8 win over No. 8 Stonington and a berth in the Class S state quarterfinals.
Julia Peay scored three times for the Lancers (9-7), who split with Stonington during the regular season. Waterford advanced to play at No. 5 Northwest Catholic of West Hartford in Monday's quarterfinals.
Katherine Chambers, Libby Morrison and Jenny Sieczkiewicz scored two goals apiece for Stonington (12-6).
In other games:
• Liz Scott and Allie Buckley combined for five goals and five assists as No. 11 Old Lyme outlasted No. 6 Ledyard 12-8 in the Class S first round.
The Wildcats (10-7) advanced to Monday's quarterfinals at No. 3 Weston, a 20-9 first-round winner over No. 14 Sacred Heart of Hamden.
Buckley finished with two goals and four assists while Scott had three goals and an assist for Old Lyme. Sammy Beers added two goals and assist for the Wildcats, Kristen Cathcart scored twice and goalie Meredith Britton made 12 saves.
Kerrie Gardner scored four goals for Ledyard, which finished 12-7, and Caitlin Larmann added two.
• Kiki Ryan scored six goals and No. 2 East Lyme advanced to the Class M quarterfinals with a 17-8 win over No. 15 Branford.
Madison Cohen, Olivia DeLea, Jill Bartlett and Erin DeLucca scored two goals apiece for the Vikings (17-2) who play host to No. 10 Brookfield in Monday's quarterfinals.
• No. 9 Ellington eliminated No. 8 St. Bernard from the Class S state tournament with an 11-7 victory. Emma Theiler scored three goals and Carley Phillips scored twice for the Saints (10-8).
• Chloe Taylor scored a pair of goals, but No. 12 Fitch was beaten by No. 5 New Fairfield 18-8 in a Class L first-round game.
Sarah Giblin added a goal and two assists for the Falcons, who finished 9-8, while Kelsey Armstrong and Brooke Startz each had a goal and an assist.
