Hartford — Residents will have more time to register for Superstorm Sandy assistance now that the Federal Emergency Management Agency extended the deadline from Jan. 28 to Feb. 12.

"With more than $37 million in federal aid approved already, there has clearly been a need for assistance for many residents," Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said in a news release Thursday announcing the extension. "Extending this deadline will ensure that any resident or business affected by Storm Sandy has ample time to apply for federal aid. We will continue with the recovery process until everyone's life is back to normal."

According to the governor's office:

• More than 12,000 Connecticut residents in Fairfield, Middlesex, New Haven, and New London counties, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe have registered for federal disaster assistance.

• More than $10.7 million has been approved for housing assistance, including short-term rental assistance and home repair costs.

• More than $849,000 has been approved to cover other essential disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses and lost personal possessions.

• More than $26.4 million in Small Business Administration (SBA) loans have been approved.

Residents in Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex and New London counties, as well as businesses across the state who suffered damage from Storm Sandy, are encouraged to register with FEMA by either calling (800) 621-FEMA or by visiting www.DisasterAssistance.gov.
