Conn College students among those going to D.C. climate rally

About two dozen New London area residents, including 16 Connecticut College students, will be among Connecticut residents heading to Washington, D.C., this Sunday for the Forward on Climate rally.

The rally, which will take place at noon on the National Mall, is being organized by The Sierra Club, and the Hip-Hop Caucus. Diane Lentakis of Milford, a member of both the Sierra Club and, is organizing two busloads of Connecticut residents and a third may be reserved if enough people sign up, she said Tuesday.

The buses will leave Hartford at 4 a.m. Sunday and pick up rally-goers at stops in New London, New Haven and Fairfield. They will begin the return trip at 6:30 p.m.

Paul Brunner, who is also helping organize the trip, said rally-goers are a diverse group.

"It's a mix of all ages," he said.

Lentakis said she hopes the rally will bring attention to the need for action on climate change.

"I hope it will bring the message home to the president and Congress," she said. "I hope this will awaken everybody that the planet is suffering tremendously and encourage people to take action."

The two buses are full, but names are being taken for the waiting list in case there are cancellations or a third bus is reserved. Lentakis said she may also encourage those on the waiting list to organize carpools. For information, send an email to Lentakis at:
