Phillies 4, Yankees 3

Domonic Brown and Tommy Joseph hit long home runs in the seventh inning and Philadelphia rallied past New York 4-3 Tuesday at Clearwater, Fla., for its first win of the exhibition season.

Brown connected off Zach Nuding, sending his second home run this spring over the batter's eye in center field. Brown is competing for the left field vacancy.

Joseph, a catcher considered by some as the Phillies' current top hitting prospect, sent a two-run drive deep over the left-field fence.

He was acquired from San Francisco last summer in the trade for Hunter Pence.

Ichiro Suzuki went 3 for 3 to lead the Yankees. He legged out an infield single, stole second and scored on Mark Teixeira's double in the first inning off Kyle Kendrick.

Cardinals 15, Red Sox 4

Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia returned to the mound for the first time since injuring his shoulder in the playoffs, getting through two scoreless innings as St. Louis beat Boston at Fort Myers, Fla.

Garcia was pulled early in the NL division series against Washington with a strained rotator cuff and inflammation.

Garcia kept the Red Sox scoreless, working around three hits and a walk. He threw 43 pitches, 30 for strikes, and struck out two.

Ryan Dempster, who joined the Red Sox as a free agent during the offseason, pitched two hitless innings. He threw 33 pitches, 24 for strikes, and fanned two.

Matt Adams, who had been slowed by tendinitis in his knee, had a two-run, pinch-hit homer for the Cardinals. He later drew a bases-loaded walk.

Marlins 7, Mets 5

Giancarlo Stanton hit his first homer of spring training to help Miami beat New York at Jupiter, Fla.

Stanton, who led the NL in slugging last year and had 37 home runs, homered off Hansel Robles. Matt Downs also homered off Robles.

Casey Kotchman hit a grand slam in his first at-bat of spring training against Mets starter Jenrry Mejia, who needed 30 pitches to get through his one inning and allowed five runs.

Kotchman had been sidelined for the past week after he ran into a pop-up machine during drills and needed four stitches to close a cut on his left ring finger.

Ricky Nolasco, the Marlins' likely opening day starter, pitched two scoreless innings in his first outing of spring training.

Twins 8, Blue Jays 4

Justin Morneau had two hits, including a run-scoring double, and Minnesota beat Toronto at Dunedin, Fla.

New London's Rajai Davis was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Blue Jays.

Morneau and teammate Joe Mauer, both taking part in next month's World Baseball Classic, made the 2 1-2 hour trip from Fort Myers.

Mauer singled and walked twice. He scored on Morneau's third-inning RBI double.

Morneau, who will be playing for Canada in the WBC, received a nice cheer when named during the announcement of pregame lineups. The first baseman hit a three-run double in Minnesota's 5-4 victory over Pittsburgh on Monday.

Both starting pitchers, Toronto's Ricky Romero and the Twins' Mike Pelfrey lasted just 1 2-3 innings in their spring training debuts.

Diamondbacks (ss) 7, Angels 7

Josh Hamilton went 0 for 3 in his Cactus League debut with Los Angeles, playing five innings in a tie with an Arizona split squad at Tempe, Ariz.

East Lyme's John McDonald was 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Diamondbacks.

Hamilton grounded out on the first pitch he faced and later flied out twice for the Angels, who signed him a five-year, $125 million free-agent deal to leave Texas for its AL West rivals.

Hamilton had no challenges in right field at Diablo Stadium. He says he's thrilled with his first spring in the Angels' clubhouse, although still a bit unfamiliar with his new teammates.

Gerardo Parra hit a two-run homer and Rod Barajas added a fourth-inning solo shot for the Diamondbacks.

Parra warmed up for his stint with Venezuela at the World Baseball Classic with a first-inning shot over Hamilton's head in right.
