UPDATED: Broad Street in Norwich reopens after car accident

Norwich — Police said that Broad Street at McKinley Avenue has reopened after a car struck two utility poles and a fire hydrant early this morning.

Police said the accident happened around 1:30 a.m., causing the roadway to be closed for several hours.

The male driver first struck a telephone pole, traveled for a short distance before it struck a fire hydrant, sheering it at its base and then continued to hit a light pole, causing it to snap.

The accident also closed Broad Street at Warren Street.

Norwich Public Utilities repaired the pole.

The unidentified driver was taken to the William W. Backus Hospital for minor injuries. The accident is under investigation.
