With the Yale-Harvard Regatta making its way to the Thames River on Sunday, it's the absolutely appropriate time for authors who penned books about rowing to come to the region for booksignings.

On Sunday, Daniel James Brown signs his book "The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics" at the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club.

The nonfiction work was featured as a summer pick by booksellers in a USA Today article. According to Booklist, Brown "offers a vivid picture of the socioeconomic landscape of 1930s America (brutal), the relentlessly demanding effort required of an Olympic-level rower, the exquisite brainpower and materials that go into making a first-rate boat, and the wiles of a coach who somehow found a way to ... defeat the best rowing teams in the world."

For author Daniella Garran, meanwhile, her booksigning Saturday in Gales Ferry will mark a return to the area. She is a 1994 Connecticut College graduate who just published the book "A History of Collegiate Rowing in America," which, naturally, includes the Yale-Harvard Regatta and boasts some historic photos from the New London Public Library. Garran, who is now a middle-school social studies teacher on Cape Cod, was a coxswain for the men's varsity crew at Conn.
