Stonington First Selectman Ed Haberek to run for re-election

Stonington - First Selectman Ed Haberek said Friday he will seek re-election this fall.

Haberek made the announcement at about noon via Facebook and Twitter.

"I want to take this moment today and announce that I am running for re-election for First Selectman of the Town of Stonington," he wrote.

He could not be reached for further comment.

Haberek is serving his third term. He defeated Bill Brown in 2007, then easily won his next two re-election bids.

In recent years, Haberek has been praised for his handling of storms and floods. He's been supported for keeping the tax rate low and for promoting the town to companies looking to expand or relocate.

But Haberek has also had to confront a lawsuit filed by Tracy Swain of Pawcatuck, who alleges that he sent her a sexually graphic photo of himself in 2010 using a town-issued Blackberry. He has denied the claims. Depositions in the case are expected to take place shortly.
