Old Saybrook — An Old Saybrook woman was killed Sunday during a car accident on private property located on VFW Highway, and the driver of the car was charged with drunken driving.

John Shepard, 42, of 288 Essex Road, Old Saybrook, was charged in the incident.

Police said they rendered medical assistance to Shepard’s passenger, Leah Coleman, 49, also of 288 Essex Road, until she was taken to Shoreline Medical Center in Essex, where she died of her injuries.

Shepard was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in Middlesex Superior Court on July 29.
