Hartford mayor's former chief of staff arrested

This Tuesday, July 30, 2013 booking photo released by the Hartford Police Department shows Jared Kupiec, former chief of staff for Hartford, Conn., Mayor Pedro Segarra. Kupiec was arrested and charged with using a motor vehicle without the owner's permission and interfering with police, both misdemeanors.

Hartford (AP) — Hartford police have arrested Mayor Pedro Segarra's former chief of staff, accusing him of improperly using a city vehicle after he resigned last month.

Jared Kupiec was charged Tuesday with using a motor vehicle without the owner's permission and interfering with police, both misdemeanors.

Police say they were investigating smashed vehicle windows earlier this month when they discovered that one of the vehicles was owned by the city and parked in front of Kupiec's apartment. Segarra's office has said Kupiec acknowledged using a spare set of keys to take the SUV without permission.

A message was left Wednesday morning seeking comment from Kupiec.

He resigned last month amid criticism of his city credit card use at a New Year's party.

Kupiec is due in court on Aug. 8
