An Army soldier charged with shooting his girlfriend in the chest while experiencing a flashback to his deployments in the Middle East has been released to a sober house and is mulling a plea offer from the state to resolve his case short of trial.

Jason Durr, 29, of Lebanon sat across the aisle from the victim, Rachel Trombino, and her family during an appearance Tuesday in New London Superior Court. Judge Susan B. Handy said she would discuss the undisclosed plea offer with prosecutor David J. Smith and defense attorney Kevin C. Barrs at Durr’s court appearance on Aug. 21. The judge will then give Durr a court date on which he will be required to accept or reject the offer. If he accepts the offer, he will plead guilty, and the case will be continued for sentencing. If he rejects the offer, the case will go on the trial list.

Trombino underwent emergency surgery after Durr allegedly shot her in May in his basement apartment at 424 Kick Hill Road with an assault-type rifle. Durr, who called police to report the shooting as Trombino lay on his bed bleeding, was charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault and illegal possession of an assault weapon.

Durr’s attorney has said Durr suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Durr was released from prison to the Veterans Affairs Hospital in New Haven and then underwent treatment for substance abuse and PTSD at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Northport, N.Y.

He was released in June to the Evolution Properties sober house in New Haven and has been attending therapy at the VA hospital, according to his court file.
