Connecticut housing-unit approvals saw big increase in July

July proved the most active month in Connecticut so far this year for housing-unit approvals, according to statistics released this week by the state Department of Economic and Community Development.

The 420 approvals in July were 13 percent higher than the 375 recorded for the same month last year.

Only three months in the past three years surpassed July's permit total.

So far this year, housing-unit approvals in the state have increased more than 10 percent compared with last year's totals.

Local communities with the most number of housing approvals through July included East Lyme, with 29; New London, 24; Stonington and Ledyard, 19, and Groton and Old Saybrook, 13. Waterford has had nine approvals so far this year, two more than at this point last year.

Some communities, such as Old Lyme and Griswold, do not report their monthly totals to the state.
