Salvation Army plans to open at temporary location next week

Norwich — The Salvation Army likely will have to wait until after Labor Day to open its temporary facility in the basement of the United Congregational Church at 87 Broadway, but the agency does plan to hold church service there at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Capt. Jerry Uttley said Tuesday that he is awaiting final approval from both church officials and Salvation Army officials to relocate to the church hall following Sunday’s fire that damaged the agency’s building at 262 Main St.

Uttley said city officials gave the OK for the temporary move Tuesday.

He hopes to resume the agency’s food pantry distribution next week, along with regular office hours and services.

The Salvation Army needs a stand-up refrigerator and a chest freezer immediately for the food pantry. Anyone wishing to offer those items in good working condition should contact Uttley at (860) 222-5687 or Debbie Kievits at (860) 373-8630.
