Lyme and Old Lyme getting back to normal

Old Lyme Emergency Management Director Dave Roberge said Wednesday that public works crews have plowed all the town’s roads and are continuing to scrape pavements and remove snow from intersections.

He said residents heeded precautions about the blizzard and the statewide travel ban, which made it easier for the town’s crews to clear roads. He said there were no reported motor vehicle accidents in town during the storm.

Old Lyme First Selectwoman Bonnie Reemsnyder also said the town fared well during the storm.

“I think the fact that we didn’t lose electricity and we didn’t have flooding made all the difference,” said Reemsnyder.

Reemsnyder said the town’s main concern is the safety of residents, particularly the elderly or those with special needs. Throughout the storm, a group reached out to residents with special needs and monitored the phones at the town’s call center.

“We have a great team that really pulls together,” she said.

Lyme First Selectman Ralph Eno said the town’s roads are in good shape and the town crew is wrapping up clearing the roads this afternoon. The crew will likely be out tomorrow morning at its regular time to treat any icy patches.

“They did a fantastic job as usual,” said Eno.

The Lyme Board of Selectmen also posted a notice on the town website that reminds residents or contractors plowing driveways not to leave residue on town roads. The notice states that the residue can make it challenging for the town crew to keep the roads clear, particularly if the snow freezes.

“There is a town ordinance which permits the Board of Selectmen to levy fines on property owners who willfully ignore this local statute,” the notice states. “Please help us make our local roads as safe and passable as humanly possible throughout the winter months as a matter of courtesy to your fellow residents.”
