    Military personnel continue cleanup operations

Those working to clear snow at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy were still digging out on Wednesday.

But the situation, including the campus roads, was “looking pretty good,” said Sam DelRusso, with the Coast Guard Academy’s grounds crew.

The crew was moving the snow “wherever we can push it and pile it,” DelRusso said. Some of the snow will be pushed down the steep banks along the campus, and a contractor may be called in to carry snow out in dump trucks. The Academy, which was closed Tuesday and Wednesday, was scheduled to open on time on Thursday. Only emergency personnel, Academy residents, cadets and students at the Leadership Development Center were allowed access to the facility while it was closed.

Naval Submarine Base New London remained closed to all but non-essential personnel on Wednesday due to on-going snow removal operations. The base employed a mix of Public Works personnel, contractors and sailors to assist with snow removal operations. They and more than seven public works, morale welfare recources and contractor plows, two public works front loaders and numerous snow blowers and shovels “are supporting clearing roads, parking lots and sidewalks,” said Chris Zendan, public affairs officer for the base. He added that waterfront operations and scheduled movements are being fully supported, and that in accordance with approved procedures, “we are hauling some snow from our waterfront and lower base areas to open areas on upper base.” The base is expected to open for normal operations on Thursday.

An official from State Pier in New London said that he hadn’t received any reports of damage there. A representative from Logistec, which was closed on Tuesday, said there was no real disruption to operations there.
