Casey Trio celebrates CD release at Side Door Jazz
Hartford-based jazz saxophonist Mike Casey might have to set up a post office box in Old Lyme. After all, he spends a lot of time at the Side Door Jazz Club, and those of us in the area are so much the better for it. On Friday, the Mike Casey Trio — with bassist Matt Dwonszyk and drummer Corey Garcia — perform there at a CD rlease party.
The album is called "The Sound of Surprise — Live at the Side Door" because, yep, the album was recorded in the club last year. In fact, the CD kicks off with a tune called "Hydraulics," which was featured as part of The Day's "Song Spinner" series in an episode taped at, ah, the Side Door.
"The Sound of Surprise" is earning praise from across the States and Europe, and it's fair to say this trio is earmarked for big things through their high-energy post-bop/free jazz/fusion excursions. (For more on the Mike Casey Trio, see a feature in Friday's Daybreak section.)
Mike Casey Trio CD release party, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Side Door Jazz Club, 85 Lyme St., Old Lyme; $25; (860) 434-0886.
