    Daniel L. King recently joined Suisman Shapiro as an Associate, focusing his practice in business/commercial law and litigation. He received his B.A. in history from Providence College in 2008, and his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 2012. King was admitted to the bars of Connecticut and Florida in 2013. He also received a Master of Laws degree in International Business & Economic Law from Georgetown University Law Center in 2013.

    Before joining Suisman Shapiro, he spent nearly three years as an Associate in the Federal practice of Deloitte. King is a 2004 graduate of Ledyard High School.

    The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut will participate in Tourism Advocacy Day April 24 in Hartford. The event is hosted by the Connecticut Tourism Coalition and will begin at 10 a.m. in the Old Judiciary Room in the State Capitol building. All individuals and businesses involved in the tourism industry are invited to attend meetings with House and Senate leaders. Joshua’s Limousine Service will provide a free coach bus, which will pick participants up from the Crystal Mall at 8:30 a.m., returning at approximately 2 p.m. There is no cost to ride or to participate.     The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT has rescheduled its “State of Waterford” update for Friday, March 31, 7:45-9 a.m. at Waterford Town Hall, 15 Rope Ferry Road. First Selectman Dan Steward and Superintendent of Public Schools Thomas Giard will present an update. Waterford’s Economic Development Commission will also honor Mijoy 747 Fishing, one of the town’s oldest businesses, at this meeting.     WORKSHOPS/NETWORKING

    Liberty Bank, in collaboration with Higher Edge, will launch a tuition-free Academy for Small Business to assist with the creation and growth of new small businesses. The Academy for Small Business will offer an eight-class curriculum, covering topics such as financial management, recordkeeping, risk management, marketing and tax planning. The program will run April 4-27.

    Entrepreneurs must be in business for between one and three years to attend the program and do not have to be Liberty Bank customers. This opportunity is available on a first-come, first-serve basis and the class is limited to 20 business owners.

    After successfully completing of at least six classes, participating business owners will be eligible for a $5,000 line of credit from Liberty Bank, with a potential matching line of credit from the Community Economic Development Fund.

    GIVING 

    The Chelsea Groton Foundation was recently given a $5 million endowment from Chelsea Groton Bank. The gift, made possible through the sale of stock, was given with the intent of providing the foundation with additional funds for the continued support of organizations that impact our region in the areas of health, human and social services; education; economic development; and arts and culture.
