Summer Pops concert takes place Saturday in Westerly
Wilcox Park in Westerly, surrounded by an incredibly hip and pulsing downtown area, is a perfect place for an outdoor summer performance. And nothing captures the myriad possibilities of such a scenario better than the annual Chorus of Westerly's Summer Pops Concert. The 37th annual production takes place Saturday and is a many-splendored experience.
Along with the 180-strong voices of the chorus and the 60-piece Pops Festival Orchestra — creatively conducted as always by the group's music director, Andrew Howell — renowned baritone Andrew Dost (currently on Broadway in "The Phantom of the Opera") will perform. The program includes a medley from the new Broadway-bound musical "The Count of Monte Cristo," for which chorus alum John Tafone composed the music and cowrote the book.
Oh, and don't forget the ritual fun provided by booming cannon, fireworks, church bells and support artists the Westerly Morris Men, vocalist Laura Dowding and New London's Shiloh Baptist Gospel Choir.
Chorus of Westerly's Summer Pops Concert, 6 p.m. Saturday, Wilcox Park, Westerly (rain dates are 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday); free; chorusofwesterly.org.
