Montville Democrats nominate candidates for council, school board

Montville — The Democratic Town Committee, which has held a majority on the Town Council for six years, will keep its slate on the council ballot the same — except to replace one member who said she is stepping down for personal reasons.

Incumbents Billy Caron, Joseph Jaskiewicz, Chuck Longton and Tim May will run for re-election. Laura Tanner, who has served three two-year terms, said she will not run for her seat again.

Tanner attributed her decision to step down to "positive changes in my personal life."

"This decision is a bittersweet one as I have thoroughly enjoyed giving back to the community I love," she wrote in a statement. "(I) am sad to think I won't be doing that any longer ... thank you Montville for trusting and allowing me to serve you."

Ryan Hartman, the chairman of the town's Park and Recreation Commission, was nominated to run for a fifth open spot on the seven-member Town Council.

State law dictates that no more than five members of the seven-member board may represent the same party.

Five of nine spots on the school board will be up for grabs in November. The Democratic Town Committee nominated a Board of Education veteran, Sandra Berardy, and a newcomer to Montville politics, Tara Crossley, to spots on the ballot for the school board. Monica Pomazon, who took her husband's seat on the school board when he died last year, also was nominated.

The Democrats also nominated Stan Gwudz to run for an open seat on the Board of Assessment Appeals and John MacNeil to run for a spot on the Zoning Board of Appeals.

The Republican Town Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday in Montville's Town Hall to nominate candidates for the municipal elections in November.
