Waterford police warn of Craigslist scammer

Waterford — If you see a Craigslist advertisement that says you’ll get the keys to a property via FedEx after you wire money to the advertiser, be wary.

That’s the message police are sending after the latest person affected by such a scheme was a Waterford resident.

According to police, a Craigslist advertisement recently listed 75 Ledyard St. in New London as being up for rent. The Waterford owner of the home, however, is not renting the place out and was unaware of the ad.

Police said the listing used (678) 653-5583 as the contact number. In this case, the person asked individuals to send money via Western Union in order to get the keys to the apartment.

A similar incident happened this past summer with a property in Groton, police said. The offender used the same phone number.

Police urged residents to follow Craigslist’s recommendations, which include:

[naviga:li]Do not extend payment to anyone you have not met in person.[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]Beware of offers involving shipping — deal with locals you can meet in person.[/naviga:li]

    [naviga:li]Never wire funds.[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]Don't accept cashier/certified checks or money orders — banks cash fake checks, then hold you responsible.[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]Transactions are between users only, no third party provides a "guarantee."[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]Never give out financial info (bank account, Social Security, Paypal account, etc).[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]Do not rent or purchase without seeing the property.[/naviga:li]

[naviga:li]Refuse background and credit checks until you have met landlord/employer in person.[/naviga:li]
