Lawmaker: Proposed DMV $250 late inspection fee 'money grab'

PROVIDENCE (AP) — A state lawmaker is criticizing Rhode Island's Division of Motor Vehicles for a proposal to levy a $250 late fee to restore the registration of vehicles if their safety inspection has lapsed.

WPRO-AM reports that Democratic Rep. Jared Nunes of Coventry on Friday called the plan "a money grab."

The DMV included the proposal in its annual budget request to the governor and wants to begin collecting the fee Jan. 1. The agency estimates it could raise $2.5 million annually.

Agency spokesman Paul Grimaldi says the fee was passed in 2009, but they could not implement it because of an outdated computer system.

He says the agency sends out 7,000 notices monthly for lapsed inspections and says this will help keep potentially faulty vehicles off the road.
