Westbrook — An Old Lyme man is facing charges after state police say they found him drunk and unresponsive inside a running vehicle early Saturday.

Michael Clark, 28, of 41 Swan Ave., Unit 2, Old Lyme, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to police, a concerned resident approached a trooper around 3 a.m. Saturday and asked the trooper to check on a man who appeared to be asleep in a running vehicle. Troopers found the vehicle, still running, parked next to a gas pump at the Mobil station at 198 Essex Road.

Police said they attempted to wake up the man behind the wheel to no avail. Troopers then broke the passenger side window to gain access to the vehicle, but the man still didn’t wake up, according to police.

Several attempts later, police said, troopers finally woke the man up. Police said he  smelled strongly of alcohol and failed field sobriety tests.

He was released on a $1,000 nonsurety bond and is scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior Court on Feb. 16.
