Residents across Connecticut Friday morning were bracing for a storm expected to pound the state with heavy precipitation and high winds.

The multifaceted storm will roll out differently in different parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service. Everyone likely will see sustained winds between 30 to 40 mph and gusts of up to 70 mph. But the northwestern region could get hammered with snow while the southern portion of the state grapples with potential flooding.

Because of the storm, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced Thursday night he would partially activate the state’s emergency operation center at noon Friday.

“We are monitoring this weather pattern diligently…” Malloy said in a news release, adding that the timing of the storm puts the worst of it smack in the middle of the evening commute. “Residents should exercise caution and allow for extra travel time.”

Many school districts already have called off classes for the day, but none of them is in southeastern Connecticut.
