    Around the region

    • Lasell College sophomore Ryan Janovic of East Lyme was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse goalkeeper of the week last week. Janovic went 2-0 with a 4.50 goals against average and stopped 24 shots.

    • Old Lyme's Erin McCarthy was one of three seniors honored before Endicott College's lacrosse game against Western New England on Saturday. McCarthy has 14 goals and seven assists this season. In Saturday's game, Alexandra Rose of East Lyme made three saves and Old Lyme's Maggie Berger, a freshman, scored her third goal of the season in a 17-2 win.

    • Sophomore Kazi Walker, a Waterford High School graduate, pitched well in relief for the Stonehill College softball team in a 5-1 loss to Saint Rose on Saturday. Walker wiggled out of a jam, stranding two runners on base. She threw two scoreless innings, striking out one and walking one without allowing a hit.

    Henry Hunt, a sophomore from Old Lyme, had a career-high tying three goals and added a ground ball in Hamilton College's 14-9 loss to Trinity on Saturday. Hunt has 10 goals and two assists this season.

    • The New England Collegiate Conference selected Elms College junior attack Vanessa Vurno, an East Lyme graduate, as its women's lacrosse player of the week. Vurno had 18 points in two wins last week, finishing with 12 goals and six assists. She also was 6-for-8 in free position shots and collected six ground balls. Vurno has 19 goals and a league-best 12 assists in nine games this season.

    • Fitch graduate Taylor Wolfgang has hit safely in seven straight games for the Bucknell softball team. Wolfgang, a freshman catcher, has three home runs and seven RBI during that stretch and raised her season average to .292. She has started all 35 games, hitting four home runs and driving in 16 runs.

    • Keene State's Shae Crosby, a senior infielder from East Lyme, leads the softball team in doubles (a career-best six), hits (20) and runs scored (10). She's third in batting at .370.

    • Central Connecticut State University sophomore Buddy Dewaine, a Montville graduate, went 3-for-7 with two RBI in a doubleheader loss to Sacred Heart on Saturday. He has a team-high 16 RBI.

    • UConn senior Kevin Foster of Groton placed second in the javelin on Sunday at the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla. His distance was 197 feet. The Huskies took three of the top five spots in that event.

    Tracking the Bears

    • Waterford's Claire Hurley has helped the Coast Guard Academy softball team jump out to its best start in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play since 2011. The Bears swept Emerson College on Sunday to improve to 6-2 in the league, 13-5 overall. They reside in third place. Hurley, a sophomore outfielder, is batting .349 with five doubles, one triple and nine RBI in 17 appearances.

    • Sophomore Riley McNulty is on a tear. He earned NEWMAC offensive athlete of the week honors after becoming the first player in men's lacrosse program history to record 100 points. In wins over MIT and Wheaton, McNulty contributed seven goals, three assists and seven ground balls. He now has 105 career points and ranks first in the conference with 43 points and second in assists with 18. The Bears are 8-2 overall, 3-0 in the league.

    Camel highlights

    • The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team already has surpassed last year's overall and conference victory total. The Camels head into this week's action at 8-3 overall, 4-3 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

    • Senior Aly Saperstein and junior Scott Mason were selected as the NESCAC's top weekly performer for women's track and men's track, respectively. Saperstein, who ranks first in the conference in javelin, won her event with a throw of 128 feet, 10 inches, at the CGA Spring Invitational last weekend. She also took fourth in the hammer at 140-10. Mason placed fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Sam Howell Invitational last weekend in Princeton, N.J. He finished in nine minutes, 12.24 seconds and owns the best time in his event in the conference this season.

    Mariners riding a wave

    • Senior Bryton Ferris has emerged as the ace of the Mitchell College baseball team pitching staff. He was named the NECC pitcher of the week for the second time this season after leading the Mariners to a 10-1 win over Dean College on Sunday. He improved to 5-0 by allowing one unearned run and seven hits in eight innings. On the season, Ferris owns a league-leading 1.02 earned run average. He's pitched a team-high 35.1 innings for the Mariners (17-3, 7-2).

    • Junior midfielder Kate McCormack is the leading scorer for the Mitchell women's lacrosse team. She's first in points (21) and goals (17) and tied for first in assists (four).
