Solo Lumineer hits Westerly Friday
Regarding this music fella Stelth Ulvang, the versatile and compelling songwriter most folks know from his membership in the Lumineers. He's also a fine solo artist whose new album, "American Boredom," is a witty, hooky batch of folk-pop songs like "St. Peter," "Champagne" and "Slip Take." If you're a fan of Sufjan Stevens, Rhett Miller, Jeff Tweedy or, of course, the Lumineers, you'll like it.
What sorta bothers me, though, is: why couldn't Mom and Dad spell "Stealth"?
I mean, I GUESS "Stealth" is what they were going for. And it's not that "Ulvang" suggests maybe Norwegian or Danish heritage where English isn't part of the equation. Ulvang's a native of Colorado.
I Googled "Stelth" and his is the only spelling I can find in any context, although some synonyms for "Stealth" as a baby's name popped up and might be pretty cool if "Stelth" ever has children of his own: Iron, Cobalt and Royce were all suggested. Hell, I'd go see a concert starring "Cobalt Uvalg" or "Iron Uvalg."
For that matter, I'd go see Stelth Uvalg — and that's based on his music rather than just his name. You can see him, too, when he performs Friday in Westerly at the Knickerbocker Music Center.
Stelth Uvalg, 8 p.m. Friday, The Knick, 35 Railroad Ave., Westerly; with Y La Bamba and Glenn Kendzia; $15 advance, $19 door; (401) 315-5070.
