    Local roundup: Avery Point sweeps CCRI

    Groton — The Avery Point baseball team wrapped up its regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Community College of Rhode Island on Sunday.

    The Pointers, who had already clinched the NJCAA Region 21 title, won the opener 4-3 and the second game 6-5 in nine innings. Avery Point (29-10-1, 6-1) hosts the NJCAA Div. II East District tournament this weekend.

    Former NFA standout Andy Grant pitched a seven-hitter in the opener, striking out 12 with one walk. Mike Chiovitti doubled and homered and Trevor Brandi had two hits and scored a run. Waterford's Justin Keating was 3-for-5 in the second game and Mike Savino had two hits.

    Six Avery Point players made the Region 21 all-star team. Brandon Cooney, Savino, Chiovitti, Mystic's Trevor Bolduc and Waterford's Alex Petchark and Keating were selected to the team and Chiovitti was a Rawling Gold Glove winner as well.

    In other games:

    • Pinch-runner Anthony Nucerino scored from second on a single by John Toppa in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie and lift UConn to a 6-4 win over Houston in an American Athletic Conference game. Anthony Prato added an RBI double in the eighth.

    Michael Woodworth had two hits for the Huskies (30-16-1, 12-9) and former Wheeler standout Troy Stefanski singled and scored twice.

    • Ledyard's Adam Crawford won the javelin at the Great Hartford Invitational on Saturday, with a throw of 159-feet, 5-inches. Other Ledyard results had James Smith second in the 100 meters (11.42) and fourth in the 200 (23.40) with Collin Wiltshire third in the high jump at 5-10. In girls' results, Ledyard's Olivia Crawford finished fourth in the 300 hutdles at 50.66.
