Local roundup: UConn's Cate selected in second round by Nationals

UConn junior Tim Cate, a left-handed pitcher who also spent consecutive summers as a member of the USA Collegiate National team, was selected in the second round of Major League Baseball's annual draft late Monday night by the Washington Nationals.

Cate, 20, was the No. 65 overall pick. Cate set UConn's career strikeout record (270) this season despite missing a month with a forearm injury. He returned just in time for the postseason and pitched 5.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to lead the Huskies to a win over LIU Brooklyn in the Conway Regional of the NCAA tournament on Saturday.

Cate, who pitched at Cheney Tech in Manchester, finished with 14 wins in 37 appearances for the Huskies. He was a freshman All-American and the American Athletic Conference Rookie Pitcher of the year in 2016 and was an All-AAC first-team pick in 2017 when he became the first UConn pitcher to register at least 100 strikeouts (101) in a single season.

Cate's "slot value" in the draft, according to MLB.com, is just under $1 million ($986,200), although he can negotiate that price tag with the Nationals.

He was the only state college or high school player to go in the first 10 rounds, which concluded on Tuesday. Rounds 11-40 will be held Wednesday, and among the players expected to go is Waterford High School pitcher Mike Burrows. He will attend UConn this fall if he doesn't sign a pro contract.

    • The CIAC postponed all of its semifinal games, including the Class M game between No. 18 Ledyard and No. 3 Wolcott, due to the forecast of rain and pop-up thunderstorms. All eight games, to be played as doubleheaders at four sites — Municipal Stadium in Waterbury (Class LL), Dunkin' Donuts Park in Hartford (Class L), Palmer Field in Middletown (Class M) and Muzzy Field in Bristol (Class S) — will be played on Wednesday.

The Ledyard-Wolcott game will start at 3:30 p.m., followed by the other Class M semifinal between No. 9 Seymour and No. 12 St. Joseph at 7.

In a release, CIAC officials said, "While it may have been possible to get some games in, there (was) a very high likelihood that some sites would not have been able to complete both games. Because of the pitching rule in baseball, every effort is made to be sure that the semifinals in a division are both played on the same day.
