Too much to lose with charter revisions

The folks supporting the Groton Charter revision are trying to make you believe that you have everything to gain and nothing to lose. But you will lose the neighbors you elect to the representative town meeting since it will be eliminated. This is a tremendous talent loss to the Town of Groton.

You will lose the ability to hold your elected, volunteer town representatives accountable since they will face the voters’ judgment only once every four years instead of every other year as they do now on the Town Council and Representative Town Meeting.

You will lose the ability of the RTM to act as a check and balance on town council, since the new board of finance will be only an advisory body. You will only have the ability to vote for one member of the finance board and only once every four years.

Town budgeting is hard, tedious work. Our current system is open and transparent with many opportunities for voter input. It is not perfect but it is better than budgeting by blunt object with an expensive, mandated budget referendum every year.

Don’t diminish your voting power. Vote "no" on the Groton charter revision.
