Stone Temple Pilots still strong, play Sunday at Foxwoods

Jeff Gutt of Stone Temple Pilots (Amy Harris, Invision/AP)

Is anything lonelier than being the replacement singer in a famous band? Sure, the immediate impulse, on finding out you've been chosen to front a world-renowned band, is excitement and a sense that "I've finally made it!"

Then you get in front of crowds who are quick to remind you that you're NOT Michael Hutchence or Jim Morrison or Rob Halford or Stuart Anderson or Freddie Mercury or Lou Gramm or Vince Neil or Jon Anderson ...

On the other hand, replacements Brian Johnson in AC/DC and Phil Collins in Genesis contributed in big fashion to their band's development.

How's it working out, then, for Jeff Gutt, who's been the singer in Stone Temple Pilots? In 2017, Gutt replaced vocalist Chester Bennington, who in turn replaced iconic STP front man Scott Weiland. The truth is, the band released a self-titled CD of new material last year — and I like it a lot. "Meadow" and "The Art of Letting Go" are more than Weiland-era worthy, and the whole thing says a lot about the all-along contributions of founding members/writers Dean and Robert DeLeo.

To see how Gutt holds up the legacy in person, catch STP Sunday in the Fox Theater at Foxwoods.

Stone Temple Pilots, 8 p.m. Sunday, Fox Theater, Foxwoods; with Camp Howard; $29.50-$49.50; 1-800-200-2882.
