Mystic-based fuel distributor Mystic Oil is planning a charitable campaign in October to raise more than $40,000 for the organization Cure Rare Disease, a group fighting to support a Branford boy battling Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

In February 2018, Branford residents Jesse and Stephanie Herzog connected with CRD’s founder, Rich Horgan, to seek deeper insight for their son, Max, 4, who has been bravely fighting against DMD since his diagnosis at just 6 months old. Horgan’s younger brother, Terry, 24, and family have also been impacted by DMD for three generations.

After hearing the Herzogs’ story first-hand, Mystic Oil president Peter Zelken was eager to be a corporate sponsor.

“We are honored to support such an important cause with our recent corporate giving program in partnership with Cure Rare Disease,” Zelken said in a release. “With millions of people impacted by more than 7,000 rare diseases, our goal is to create awareness, inspire hope, and contribute to the funding of their transformational solutions.”

A significant portion of the company’s gas sale profits in October will be donated from two locations: Mystic Village Mobil at 66 Whitehall Ave., Mystic, and Guilford Citgo, 455 Boston Post Road, Guilford.

Murphy Beverage Co. also will also kick off its own eight-week fundraising program via $1 and $5 in-store pinups at 100 liquor store locations throughout Connecticut to support CRD’s initiatives.
