Preston — A recount is tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Town Hall for the full-term Board of Education race, in which Democrat and current board Chairman Sean Nugent was elected over Republican incumbent Thomas Turner by fewer than 20 votes, triggering an automatic recount.

Registrar Andrew Stockton said Thursday he has scheduled the hand recount to begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the lower level Town Hall conference room, unless Turner submits written notification declining the recount.

Stockton said he expects to hear Turner's decision on Friday.

Turner could not be reached for comment Thursday by The Day.

In the Board of Education full-term race, Democratic incumbent Deborah Burke-Grabarek received the most votes, 962, followed by incumbent Republican Daniel Harris with 861, Nugent with 809 and Turner with 796. Three candidates will be elected.

Stockton also looked into whether a recount was needed in the race for Planning and Zoning Commission alternate, but said because the two candidates involved in a close race both were elected, no recount was necessary.

In that race, the top two vote-getters were within 20 votes of each other. Democrat Nathaniel Koniecko received 848 votes and Republican Robert Berube, 833 votes. The third candidate in the race, Republican Lyle Borden with 710 votes, was not elected.
