Ledge Light providing free flu shots this week

New London — Ledge Light Health District announced Monday that it will offer flu shots this week for people 15 and older.

Flu continues to be widespread in Connecticut, with the state Department of Public Health reporting that 252 flu-related hospitalizations occurred in the week that ended Jan. 25. Three flu-related deaths were reported during the week, bringing the statewide total to 23 deaths since flu season began in mid-October.

Ledge Light officials said the flu, which can advance to pneumonia and other complications, is not going away anytime soon.

Ledge Light officials also are collecting information about the novel coronavirus, which has been declared a global health threat.

Gov. Ned Lamont announced Friday that test results from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that a second Connecticut resident investigated for the virus had tested negative. The patient, a high school student from China who participated in a conference at Yale University in New Haven, tested positive for the flu.

The first Connecticut resident under investigation for the coronavirus, a Wesleyan University student in Middlesex County, also tested positive for the flu. No other patients in the state are under investigation.

“We continue to be vigilant and coordinate a proactive response with local health and medical providers across the state,” said state Public Health Commissioner Renée Coleman-Mitchell. “We are also in the height of flu season and we recommend residents take extra precautions to avoid spreading the flu.”
