Norwich man charged with federal gun and drug offenses

A Norwich man was arrested Friday based on a federal criminal complaint charging him with gun and drug offenses.

Antoine Walker, 40, of Norwich was charged with possession with the intent to distribute controlled substances and with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He appeared Friday afternoon in New Haven before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah A. L. Merriam, who ordered Walker be detained.

The U.S. Department of Justice wrote in a news release Friday that Walker may face enhanced penalties based on the quantity and types of drugs seized while police were investigating his residence earlier in June, his alleged prior convictions and if he is found to be in violation of certain conditions as part of a federal supervised release.

Within Walker’s federal complaint, authorities detail that while Norwich police were conducting a drug trafficking and murder investigation of Walker’s residence on June 10, police found approximately 130 grams of suspected fentanyl, approximately 88 dose bags of suspected fentanyl, nearly two pounds of suspected marijuana, various items used to process and package drugs for street sale and a loaded .38 Special Smith and Wesson revolver. Police also say they found approximately 15 grams of suspected crack cocaine together with a digital scale.

Walker was arrested on Connecticut state charges at that time.

Authorities wrote in Friday’s news release that Walker is a convicted felon and in October 2013 was sentenced in the Southern District of New York to 80 months of imprisonment and three years of supervised release for armed robbery and bank robbery offenses.

United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut John H. Durham stressed in Friday’s news release that a federal criminal complaint is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. Charges are only allegations and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Norwich Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Margaret M. Donovan and Maria del Pilar Gonzalez.
