Swab Summer gets going at the Coast Guard Academy
New London — Prospective members of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Class of 2024, known as swabs, started their traditional Swab Summer indoctrination Wednesday at the academy.
The swabs reported in on July 8 for a two-week restriction of movement period that included online and classroom instruction and strict health monitoring and distancing protocols due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Swabs spent Wednesday on haircuts, uniform issue and drilling in their platoons.
The seven-week indoctrination to military academy life, which also includes a trip on the academy's training tall ship, Eagle, has been cut to five weeks this year due to coronavirus precautions.
