    Local roundup: Gustavsen leads Bacon past Stonington

    Colchester — Skylar Gustavsen scored twice as Bacon Academy beat Stonington 2-1 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference girls' soccer game on Tuesday.

    Gustavsen, who has scored five goals in six games, scored both goals in the first half. Sarah Vilardo and Sophie Schroll had assists for Bacon (4-0-1). Vanessa Benjamin scored a second-half goal for Stonington (4-1-1).

    In other games:

    • Ledyard beat Waterford 2-1 in an ECC game, with an own goal in overtime deciding things. Abby DiRico scored to give Ledyard (2-4-1) the lead and teammate Bella Drummond made 11 saves. Aimee Girard of Waterford (3-1-1) scored on a direct kick late in the second half to send the game to overtime. Myra Rheaume and McKenzie Gregory combined for three saves for the Lancers. 

    H.S. boys' soccer

    • Dominic Ranelli scored three goals as St. Bernard beat New London 4-1 in an ECC game. Marty Arvidson and Nathan Belchik combined for eight saves for the Saints (2-2), who also scoring on an own goal. Kervens Joseph scored and Anthony Martinez made 15 saves for New London (1-4).

    H.S. boys' cross country

    • Plainfield beat Grasso Tech 15-50 in an ECC meet. Jack Pothier of Plainfield won the race in a course-record time of 16:52. Nicholas Stavesky was Grasso's top finisher, coming in sixth.

    • cOld Lyme lost to Old Saybrook 19-43 in a Shoreline Conference meet. Aidan Powers was Old Lyme's top finisher, coming in fourth in 18:28. Also making the top 10 were John Almy (fifth) and George Williams (ninth).

    H.S. girls' cross country

    • Old Saybrook edged Old Lyme 29-30 in a Shoreline Conference meet. Maddy Morgado of Old Lyme was third in a time of 20:54. Also making the top 10 for Old Lyme were Alyssa Spooner (fifth), Anne Colangelo (sixth), Bella Hine (seventh) and Mary Wholean (ninth). 

    H.S. swimming

    • Viv Martinez won the 100-yard butterfly (1:12.40) and the 100 breaststroke (1:24.60) to help lift Waterford past Ledyard 81-57 Monday in a virtual meet, with each team swimming at its own home pool.

    Jenna Morin (50 freestyle), Camille Caldrello (diving) Erin Gerboth (500 free) and Elizabeth Saucier (100 back) also won individual events for Waterford (1-1) and Gerboth, Saucier, Murphy Ryan and Aidan Sturm teamed for a win in the 400 free relay.

    Tessa Finnegan won the 200 free (2:31.23) and the 100 free (1:06.11) for Ledyard (0-2), Alex Martinez-Garcia took the 200 individual medley and the Colonels also got wins from their 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Montville picked up its first win of the season, beating Wheeler 25-12, 25-6, 25-16 on Monday. Maya Hillman had 12 kills and four aces, Brooke Taylor had 18 assists and Rori Curran had six kills and eight aces for Montville (1-3).

    College honors

    • Coast Guard's Maeve Roach was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Athlete of the Week. Roach, a senior, earned the individual title this past weekend in a dual meet win against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, covering the 5K course in 17:59, more than one minute ahead of the next closest competitor. It was a huge improvement for the senior from Chicago, as her prior best on a 5K cross country course was 21:07 from 2018.

    This marks the second time in award history that a female athlete from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy has been named National Athlete of the Week during the cross country season as Kaitlyn Mooney won the award as freshman in 2017.
