Rhode Island man charged with driving stolen truck into Waterford home

Waterford — A Rhode Island man was charged with driving a stolen truck off the road and into a home on Oswegatchie Road on Wednesday night, police said.

Jonathan Wilson, 43, of Woonsocket, R.I., was charged with second-degree larceny, second-degree criminal trover, reckless driving, evading responsibility and failure to maintain the proper lane.

Wilson allegedly stole a white pickup truck from Putnam on Wednesday and then drove to Waterford, where he struck a fire hydrant, veered off the road onto a front lawn and smashed into a house on Oswegatchie Road between Riverside Drive and East Drive about 5 p.m., according to police.

After striking the house, Wilson allegedly jumped out of the truck and ran off. Officers found him in the neighborhood with the help of a Connecticut State Police K-9 and took him into custody.

Water from the fire hydrant flooded the street and flowed into the home, causing damage. Parts of Oswegatchie Road were closed Wednesday evening as police investigated and the Public Works Department and Veolia Water fixed the hydrant and stopped the flooding, police said.

No injuries were reported, police said.

Wilson was being held on a $100,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court in New London on Thursday, police said.
