Jones, Carrington lead Sun past Wings in preseason finale

The Connecticut Sun had their final dress rehearsal Saturday afternoon and beat the Dallas Wings, 89-76, in a WNBA preseason game at College Park Center in Arlington, Texas.

Who makes the cut for Connecticut may be dictated by who hasn’t arrived yet.

Veteran post Brionna Jones scored a game-high 22 points with nine rebounds to lead the Sun. Rookie DiJonai Carrington was among the team leaders in minutes (25) and made 6 of 15 shots for 16 points with five rebounds.

Connecticut must set its roster by Thursday and will carry 11 players. It was without three starters Saturday — post Jonquel Jones and guards Briann January and Jasmine Thomas.

“It’s a complicated question,” Connecticut head coach Curt Miller said when asked roster construction. “With Jasmine not here and AT (Alyssa Thomas) injured (and out for the season), all the sudden (we have) nine (players), which triggers the salary hardship waiver opportunity. So there’s a lot of nuances that come through the CBA and salary cap exceptions and hardship waivers.

“We have a lot of moving parts down the stretch here.”

Jones is in quarantine protocol after returning from play in Russia. She may be able to join the team Wednesday.

January, whose Hungarian team won that country’s league title last week, has a chance to be available for Friday’s season opener at the Atlanta Dream.

Thomas will miss the start of the season because Fenerbahce, her team in Turkey, is playing in that country’s best-of-five championship series. Game 3 is Tuesday.

Connecticut likely has only two openings because it has six players with guaranteed contracts with another three (Kaila Charles, Beatrice Mompremier and Natisha Hiedeman) being strong candidates to make the team.

Veteran wing DeWanna Bonner scored 10 points in 16 minutes for Connecticut while rookie post Stephanie Jones played a team-high 26 minutes with 10 points and eight rebounds. Rookie forward Brianna Fraser added 10 points and six rebounds over 13 minutes.
