Stonington plans meeting on affordable housing plan

Stonington — The town's Department of Planning and its Economic Development Commission will host the second in a series of community conversations to get input on the final draft of the town's housing affordability plan on June 17 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the American Velvet Mill on Bayview Avenue.

The plan is designed to guide the actions needed to make housing more affordable in the community.

"We invite all members of the community to join us for an informative meeting, and we welcome everyone's input to make the Town of Stonington a community where everyone can live affordably, and enjoy all of the historic character, top-rated schools and seaside atmosphere," Susan Cullen, the town's director of economic and community development, said in the announcement for the meeting.

In Stonington, 34.8% of all households and 46.6% of renters spend more than 30% of their income on housing.

One theme in the draft plan is to remove impediments and create incentives in the town's zoning regulations to develop affordable housing. There is funding in the approved 2021-22 budget to update the zoning Regulations. Town officials are looking for input from residents on zoning updates.

The process began this winter with a virtual discussion on the current state of housing and future possibilities in Stonington. That presentation can be viewed at bit.ly/snhousing.

“During the conversation, it was noted that a diverse range of housing options can help attract new, younger residents, provide an opportunity for retirees to remain in the community and ensure those who work in our community also have the option to live there,” First Selectwoman Danielle Chesebrough said.

The town has used a state grant to hire housing expert Don Poland of Gorman + York to research and write the plan.

The forum on June 17 will be the final opportunity for residents to offer their input before the final plan is submitted. A final draft of the plan will be posted before the meeting at bit.ly/snhousingconvo
