    Local roundup: Long gives Waterford Legion walk-off win

    Waterford — Jackson Long hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Waterford a 2-1 win over Moosup on Tuesday in an American Legion Zone 6 game.

    Robert Zawacki pitched a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts for Waterford and Evan McCue added an RBI.

    Hayden LeClair threw a five-hitter and struck out three for Moosup.

    NL Babe Ruth 15 fundraiser

    • New London Babe Ruth is holding a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Wednesday for the state champion 15-year-old team. The dinner will be at the New London Elks at 6:30 p.m., and the cost will be $25.

    Zone 6 Jr. Legion

    • Dugan Marsh allowed one hit over four innings as Norwich beat TriTown, 10-0, in five innings due to the mercy rule. Jacob Bernier went 2-for-3, including a triple, with three RBI for Norwich (5-1) and Dan St. George went 2-for-3, including a double, with two runs and two stolen bases. Justin Terry also pitched the final inning in relief.

    • Norwich stole nine bases en route to a 9-2 win over TriTown on Monday. Pat Terry had two hits, scored twice and stole three bases and Brendan Droesch had two hits and drove in two runs for Norwich.

    • Shawn Nadeau singled home Mike Evans in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Padres beat the Knights 3-2. Rob Peruzzotti singled and doubled and Ken Olszewski had two hits for the Padres. Liam Kane homered and Jacob Plikus doubled for the Knights.

    Avery Point's Kobylanski honored

    • Avery Point Athletic Director Michael Kobylanski has been recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for the seventh straight year as a part of its "Volunteer 15" program. He was the only National Junior College Athletic Association AD to receive the honor.

    Despite the ongoing pandemic, Kobylanski was involved with several initiatives during the course of the 2020-21 academic year. During the fall, 2020, Kobylanski assisted the Avery Point community as an instructor for a section of its First-Year Experience course. Kobylanski also served as coach in his hometown of Cheshire in conjunction with Cheshire Youth Baseball. Kobylanski is also a member of the CoSIDA Job Seekers Committee and is a contributor to the organization's Job Primer for young professionals. In total, he accumulated more than 50 volunteer hours during the year.

    The CoSIDA Volunteer 15 program is an initiative to get CoSIDA members more involved in their communities. The program is designed to help promote the great efforts and success our members have in their communities. To qualify, CoSIDA members had to volunteer at least 15 hours during the school year. The program is administered by the CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness Committee.
