    Local students awarded Coast Guard Foundation scholarship

    The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to strengthening the Coast Guard community and service by supporting members and families, announced that it has awarded 158 scholarships in 2021 totaling $345,500 in support. In the 31 years of the program, the Coast Guard Foundation has paid out more than $6 million to over 1,400 college-aged young adults.

    Hayley Phillips, child of Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Craig Phillips, from Groton, was awarded a Coast Guard Foundation scholarship. She is currently attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

    Cristina Breneman, child of Joseph Breneman Jr., retired Coast Guard veteran, from Voluntown, is attending University of Vermont this fall.

    Bryson and Hayden Doughty, children of Heather Doughty, retired Coast Guard veteran, from New London, are attending University of Nevada Las Vegas and Simmons University, respectively this fall.

    Hayley Phillips, child of Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Craig Phillips, from Groton, is attending University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

    In addition:

    Jenabelle Felmy, child of Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Larry Felmy Jr., from Gales Ferry, who is attending Appalachian State University, received a Clappin Family Scholarship.

    The Coast Guard Foundation Scholarships benefit the children of enlisted men and women who are serving or have served in the U.S. Coast Guard, whether active duty, reserve, retired or deceased.

    “We are honored to continue our dedication to the children of the Coast Guard as they pursue their higher education goals,” said Susan Ludwig, president, Coast Guard Foundation. “These amazing students are already a benefit to their communities and a proud example of the values instilled in them by their Coast Guard parents.
