High flying utility poles
Residents of Mystic witnessed the unusual sight of 30-foot utility poles flying over their heads Tuesday.
A cooperative effort between the Denison Homestead, the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, Eversource, Avalonia Land Conservancy, and Aquarion Water Co. to remove the poles from a decommissioned transmission line running along Avalonia and Aquarion land in Mystic will help reestablish the 30-foot-wide corridor as part of the adjacent Atlantic White Cedar swamp.
A Bell 407 helicopter with JBI Helicopter Services of Pembroke, N.H., made the trip down from Manchester Tuesday morning and began shuttling the poles, as well as some dumpster bags of smaller debris from the project, across the Mystic skies shortly after 9 a.m.
Eversource will be using land at the end of Maritime Drive owned by the Denison Homestead to land, store and dismantle the poles after they are removed.
