    Local roundup: Coast Guard softball splits NEWMAC tournament doubleheader

    Springfield, Mass. — Selena Serna hit a two-run homer to right-center field in the sixth inning and the third-seeded Coast Guard Academy softball team defeated No. 6 Wheaton 2-0 in the first game of the New England Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference tournament Wednesday.

    The Bears then dropped into the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament with a 1-0 defeat against No. 2 Springfield.

    Coast Guard (30-10) will face either No. 4 WPI or No. 5 Babson in the losers’ bracket at noon Friday at MIT.

    Against Wheaton, Christine Carey and Isabelle Shroyer each had two hits and Dana Walker pitched a complete-game four-hitter for the victory.

    In the second game, Springfield scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh when Kristen Acocella led off with a double, advanced on a groundout and scored on a bunt by Alli Olsen. Coast Guard left what would have been the go-ahead run on third base in the top of the seventh.

    Women’s lacrosse

    • Gianna Cascio had three goals and an assist for No. 4 Coast Guard in a 16-6 loss to top-seeded MIT in the semifinals of the NEWMAC tournament. Abby McCallister had a goal and two assists for Coast Guard (11-7). Ellie Rabenold had five goals and three assists for MIT (16-2), which led 10-4 at halftime.

    H.S. girls’ tennis

    • Sam Tan and Elaina Morosky each won singles matches in three sets and Old Lyme blanked Valley Regional 7-0. Callie Bass and Katherine Zhang also won in singles for the Wildcats (13-0).

    • Grace Duggan, Marcella Hamm and Emily Fulling won singles matches and Stonington defeated Fitch 6-1. The Bears are 7-0. Maddie Beaulieu won No. 3 singles for Fitch (7-4).

    • Sarah Hage and Michelle Liu won Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, as Waterford defeated East Lyme 5-2. The Lancers are 8-4. Avery Rindell and Veronica Castro won in singles for East Lyme (2-6).

    Boys’ tennis

    • Cooper Munson won No. 1 singles and Old Lyme defeated Valley Regional 7-0. Griffin McGlinchey, Andy Sicuranza and Ryan Miller (forfeit) also won in singles for the Wildcats (11-0).

    • Ian Balfour won No. 1 singles as Waterford defeated NFA 7-0. Christos Matsas, Peter Colonis and Noah Westkott also won in singles for the Lancers (5-4).

    H.S. boys’ volleyball

    • Paul Ericson had 17 assists, three kills and two aces as Norwich Free Academy defeated Putnam 25-14, 25-15, 25-18. Eddie Santana had seven kills and Jhon Lopez Choc 28 digs for NFA (11-3).

    Boys’ golf

    • Aaron Gould, Elijah Klusek and Colby Fedus won their individual matches and Montville defeated Windham 4.5-2.5. Montville (6-2) won the overall match by four strokes.

    • Medalist Tyler Moore shot a 38 and East Lyme defeated Old Lyme 7-0 at Old Lyme Country Club. The Vikings are 9-1.

    • Medalist Keiran Boscoe shot 40 and Wheeler blanked New London 7-0 at Great Neck CC. The Lions are 6-1.

    Girls’ golf

    • Georgia Anglin shot a 53 to lead East Lyme past Stonington 219-226 at Elmridge GC. Morgan Dube and Natalie Brush each had 55s for the Vikings. Stonington’s Allie Mentz was the medalist, shooting a 50.

    • Caroline Godere and Kaydance Arpin each shot a 54 to lift NFA past Bacon Academy 220-279. Mia Belcamino had the top score for Bacon with a 57.

    Girls’ lacrosse

    • The King School defeated Williams 19-11. Lucy Fader with had five goals and Skyler Frost scored three times for the Blues (4-7).

    • Cheshire handed East Lyme its first loss of the season 12-7. Alanna Benoit, Meg Nagle and Izzy Pazzaglia had two goals apiece for the Vikings (10-1).

    • Lily Poletto had three goals and two assists Tuesday and Dani Bruno also had three goals in East Lyme’s 17-2 victory over Woodstock Academy in ECC Division I. Benoit, Nagle and Abbie Belleville had two goals each for the Vikings (10-0, 4-0).

    Boys’ lacrosse

    • Cam Elenteny scored six goals as Stonington defeated St. Bernard/Wheeler 17-3. Nathan Mahoney added five goals for the Bears (9-1). Ben Howes scored twice for St. Bernard/Wheeler (3-6, 2-3).

    • Brian Li scored three goals as Williams defeated Forman 11-3. Marc Macera and Henry Champagne had two goals apiece for the Blues (7-3).

    • Logan Jenkins scored five times Tuesday in NFA’s 15-5 win over Waterford in ECC Division I, as the Wildcats outscored Waterford 7-0 in the first half. Tommy Brunelli had three goals for NFA (6-3, 3-2) and Conor Gaughan two goals and three assists. Johan Deon had four goals for Waterford (7-4, 3-2).
