Muddy Waters to close — but just for two weeks

New London — Muddy Waters Café will be closing for two weeks, Jan. 8-21, for renovations to the dishwasher room and kitchen, allowing owners Barry Neistat and Susan Devlin to take a well-earned vacation to Sarasota, Fla.

The Mystic-based contractor Advanced Improvements will be ripping out the dishwasher room to install new ceilings, floors and walls, Neistat said, and adding a new ceiling and lighting in the kitchen.

Last year, Muddy Waters put in a new floor and repointed the brick wall.

Neistat said they don't do anything drastic because people like the place, but that in a building that's nearly 190 years old, it's important to keep up on renovations.

Plus, being open seven days a week all year, he and Devlin need those two weeks off, anyway.

"Business is good, but we do need a break, and January for the last 15 years has been our slowest month of the year," Neistat said, noting that Connecticut College students who frequent the café are home for winter break.

He added, "It's a quiet month; it's a cold month. People are spent from Christmas, so they're not going out as much."

Muddy Waters will close Sunday at 1 p.m. and reopen on Jan. 21.
