Comcast extending cable, other services to New London

Comcast, the cable provider, announced Friday it’s expanding its network to New London, where it will provide residents and businesses with “a new choice for TV, internet, voice, home automation and wireless services.”

Atlantic Broadband also provides cable services in the city.

“The New London area offers an attractive opportunity for us to extend our network to an area that borders our existing service areas in Groton and Norwich,” Michael Parker, senior vice president of Comcast’s Western New England Region, which includes Connecticut, said in a news release. “We are delighted to be responding to consumers and businesses who have long expressed their desire for Xfinity and Comcast Business products and services."

Comcast announced last month that it was launching a new internet service delivering speeds up to 1 gigabit per second to residential and business customers in Connecticut. Its work to extend service throughout New London will continue through 2018.

“We’re excited to welcome Comcast to the neighborhood, and applaud the significant investment they are making to bring innovative products and services to New Londoners,” state Sen. Paul Formica, R-East Lyme, was quoted as saying in the release. “Comcast has a history of giving back to the communities it serves and being a creator of jobs and opportunities to support the growing needs of businesses and residents.”

Formica co-chairs the state legislature’s Energy and Technology Committee.

With the expansion of service, Comcast will be available in 84 cities and towns in Connecticut. It employs more than 1,300 people in local call centers, Xfinity Stores and technical operations centers, which serve residential customers and businesses.

The company’s Berlin office serves as headquarters for the region, which, in addition to Connecticut, includes Vermont, western Massachusetts, western New Hampshire and Carmel, N.Y.
